Shipping Register - crew list:

Date 1915 - John Satterfield Hanmer is recorded as being on the "Centurion" as a Cadet aged 19. His previous ship had been the "Benefactor", from which he was discharged in 1914. The Benefactor was a steam vessel, registered in Liverpool in 1912, built of steel in Partick in the same year. It was owned by the Charente Steam Ship Company, Mersey Chambers, Liverpool and managed by Geoffrey H Cole.

Other particulars of his engagement - his home address is given as Cross Green, Formby.

Medal Card:

Created by the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen, 1872-1992 and held by the National Archives, Kew.

The Mercantile Marine Medal was awarded to those who served at sea for at least six months, and on at least one voyage through a danger zone; and the British War Medal was automatically awarded to all recipients of the Mercantile Marine Medal.

Ribbons were issued in lieu of medals until the medals were minted. Clasps were awarded for taking part in a particular battle or action.

The reverse of the card contains the date the award(s) were confirmed and the address to which the medals and ribbons were sent.

In John Satterfield Hanmer's case it looks as though the ribbons were issued and sent to the Mercantile Marine Office in Canning Place, but although the medals were also issued and there is an application date of 4 September 1919, there is no evidence that anything was ever sent.
